How to Develop a Small Business Website

By: Stacy Fox

Because I developed my attorney husband’s website, people often ask me how to develop a internet site for their own small business. The fact of the matter is that it is not as difficult as it first appears. In fact, using a cheap web package like SBI, one can build a small business site that is compelling and pre-sells.

How do you pre-sell? Basically, that means that you provide enough information about your goods and services to gain the trust of your internet visitor. Then, when they are ready to approach a business about solving their concern, they will come to you.

That’s exactly what we did with my husband’s site. We have over 60 pages of resources about issues such as property, custody, child and spousal support, and the divorce process itself.

We also have an original “Ask Julian Anything” call to action where site visitors can email questions about their individual divorce case to my husband and get a return answer by email. We of course include a “call to action” in these return emails urging them to contact the law firm and schedule an appointment to more fully discuss their case.

We get approximately 50% of our traffic through pay per click and 50% through search engine traffic. Even paying for website visitors, we spend less than half of what we would on a phone book ad. And, the results from the web are better.

To build the site, we made a list of the type of questions people facing a family law action typically have. Then, we wrote web pages answering those questions. Then – and here’s a key step – we found keywords that didn’t have strong competition and organized the pages for those words. So, when you type in “restoring former name”, we come up early in the Google search pages.

Site Build It makes it easy to build a web site such as this. They offer a free keyword search tool. They also take you hand in hand through the optimization process. It’s as easy as typing in your keywords into a form for each page.

Then, Site Build It helps you submit the site to Google, Yahoo, and MSN so that you can be found by customers searching for you.

Many small business owners think the only way to build a website is to hire a web design firm to do it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, you should invest the time to create a compelling site using a tool like Site Build It.

And, that is how you create an internet site for your small business.
