Copywriting – A Business for Your Business

By: ingrid sure

Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, defines copywriting or the act of writing copy: the process of writing the words that promote a person, business, opinion, or idea. It may be used as plain text, as a radio or television advertisement, or in a variety of other media.
But copywriting goes much deeper than that…It is both a science and an art. It might just be (for some) the hardest job in the world, but also the most rewarding one…both financially and emotionally. There has always been some confusion about copywriting. “ Copywriting” is not “Copyrighting”. Copyrighting is the act of securing the copyright on a piece of work. A copyright is just the legal right to reproduce the work. On the other hand, copywriting is generally used in advertising and marketing to sell goods and services. It can also be used to communicate with people. You can find it everyday in ads, on the Internet, in the newspapers, magazines, billboards and radio, even on the package of the things you buy. A copywriter`s skills are not always higly appreciated (just words on a piece of paper) and when it comes to thousands of dollars for only one week of work, it gets even less respected. But, come to think about it, when written correctly and sent to the right people, the message can turn a mediocre business into an industry giant very quicly. Words are reproduced thousands of times by thousands of people…and it costs only fractions of a dollar per letter to distribute it. A persuasive letter is one of the most powerful forces in the world today. Words have been used to express emotions, but words on a piece of paper have been known to create or prevent wars, to sell millions of dollars in goods and so on. O.K., copywriters might not win the Nobel Prize in Literature, but they will write with simple language and target efficiently their audience. With all the complaints they get, no one has ever complained they write too clear. They have over 15 million readers after all. The role of the copywriter is to write copy. Simple. To write copy, copywriters must study their target-audience and their subject matter. Then they create the message. They must not only pay attention to how the copy looks (if the copy looks too overwhelming, no one will read it), but also to how it flows. The ideas and words in the copy have to connect properly. The length and type of the copy can vary; they can produce letters 30 pages long or as short as one sentence (or a word or two). Writing 30 pages is definitely a skill. It has to be extremely interesting to actually be read by someone. Meanwhile, writing a sentence could take months of digging into volume after volume of dry product data and material to uncover the one phrase that can best fit and describe the product. Every word counts and its worth is weight in gold! In both cases, every word counts. The copywriter knows that every space used to distribute the copy is payed, in a magazine for example. So, he must be agonizing over every word that persuades the audience to listen and buy the products.
